A catharsis is a cleansing relief of emotional or physical pain or discomfort.
On the physical side, discomfort of the gastric persuasion might be relieved by a cathartic agent of the emetic sort, while discomfort of the intestinal persuasion might require a cathartic agent of the laxative sort.
Emotional pain or discomfort can be relieved for some people by resort to the old primal scream, after which they often feel relieved of their anxiety and ready to load up on more emotional baggage that they can look forward to relieving by catharsis again, later -- a sort of emotional bulimia.

Catharsis means that you're getting rid of something. It's like vomiting only with feelings and emotions.

This term comes from Aristotle's theories on tragedy. He said that when people saw someone else experieincing a downfall or tragedy, that the viewer, in a way, felt the same emotions of pain. By the end of the play, when they had gone through the pain but had no permanent consequences (unlike the person in the play) the viewer feels a sense of "relief."
It basically refers to the sense of relief that comes after going through something bad and experiencing that, yet making it through to the "other side" of the pain.
