    the number of chromosomes in parents are 46(2n)this is called haploid number.

    by fusion. in reproduction the number of chromosomes splits into 2 from 23 chromosomes this number is called the diploid number( half the haploid number also represented as "n"). so the one from the mother will be "n"- 23chromosomes in gamete and same with d father. Now this gametes which are diploid numbers(n). will form haploid number (2n) when they meet. which gives 46 chromosomes. 23 from both parents.(23 +23=46)or (n+n=2n)
