How can I make the most of my AT&T DSL connection?

Do I need a faster ethernet card? I have the Elite service which as speeds up to 384 to 608 Kbps upstream. Does my network card determine how fast I download or upload (I have 10/100 right now)? Did I waste my time getting a faster upload since my card seems to be running at 100 Mbps? Thanks for any clarification or direction if I need a new card!

    ★★ SPEED UP DSL ★★

◙ Your PC may not be setup properly to take full advantage of broadband speeds. Modifying your configuration to maximise performance is known as tweaking. For many users, tweaking is a misnomer as it implies subtle improvements. Fixing huge problems is more accurate!

◙ Google Web Accelerator is an application that uses the power of Google's global computer network to make web pages load faster. Google Web Accelerator is easy to use; all you have to do is download and install it, and from then on many web pages will automatically load faster than before.

    1M is app. 1000K

100M is app. 100,000K you shouldn't need a faster card for upload or download anytime soon. What the faster nics do is improve your speed on your internal network. For example, if you transfer files between 2 pc's on the same network frequently.

The upstream of your Elite service is how fast you can send information to the internet. Primarily this would be used if you uploaded a bunch of information to the web via browser or ftp, hosted a web server from your home, or things like this. Most people spend more time downloading than uploading and need faster service on the downstream.

No you didn't waste your time getting a faster upload, but there are still things you can do to improve your internet connection most of which have already been referenced by other answers.

Keep your computer running FAST. Be sure to remove Spyware and other pointless programs that are constantly on-line. You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Many accellerators don't work. Having a proper setup does. Make sure that your filters are installed properly. Use the http://www.dslreports.com to check your speed. Contact your DSL provider if you believe that your speed could be better.

A new card won't help, and here's why. Your DSL modem is probably also 10/100, so going any faster with your NIC card would be pointless.

But let's do some quick MATH

    NIC card/Modem Speed: 10MB means 10,000,000

Elite Service speed: 608 Kbps means 608,000

You see, your DSL service crawls when compared to your Network card.

What you need is a faster Downstream... your upstream is ok, unless you host stuff on your PC.

Try to get at least a 1.5Mb Downstream
