Depends on what their role was. Major Peyton and Major Taylor were both aide de camps for General Lee. They didn't fight, but kept the general informed of the status of the army. They were also hosts to the general's social affairs. These men were well dressed and they had to be to give the Army of Northern Virginia the appearance of a professional army. If a major was an executive officer of a combat unit then he would be second in command of that regiment. He would be in combat and if he was Southern would definitely show that. The South wore uniforms from gray to an off blue, to butternut. If they were second in command their mission would be to direct the troops, form lines of battle from columns of force, and give out range to target.Source(s): http://www.robert-e-lee.freeservers.com/Lee_Staff.... http://www.vermontcivilwar.org/units/6/

make sure the men had their equipment& supplies although they were hard to come by then. at first the dress was fancy, but as the war went on clothing was scarse & they wore what ever they could scrounge up. at times they were barefoot & no coats or blankets.
