It's very strange news. As a movie buff and a person who enjoys the Oscars despite their flaws, I'm so used to there being five Best Picture nominees. Ten seems a bit much and I'm afraid it will dilute the "Oscar affect" -- where a nominated movie gets a box office boost. With double the nominees, it might seem less special to be nominated. Overall, I feel this is a bid to let more so-called "mainstream" films in. There was a lot of furor when the quiet, character-driven Holocaust drama "The Reader" beat out "The Dark Knight" and "WALL-E" for a Best Picture nomination. I believe the producers are hoping, with ten slots, more superhero epics and comedies will slip in and thus generate more average-joe interest in the telecast.
