Does every state require auto insurance?

    Yes, but the level of insurance required varies. To find out how little you can get away with call for a quote and say you want only the legal minimum for your state. Please be aware that if your car is financed (i.e. owned by a bank) you will have to maintain the comprehensive coverage which makes it more expensive.

    An alternative in California (where I am) is to self-insure by posting a bond with the DMV. It's hugely expensive to do, but it is an option.

    I'm not sure but don't risk it. Here in California they have auto insurance (liability) for as low as 40 bucks a month. Better be safe than sorry.

    Yes, each state requires you to carry at least liability insurance.
