The slave trade first served the Africans themselves, who sold their own people to European traders for money, revenge, and to become more powerful. Then it progressed to the islands between Western Africa and the Americas. It then came to the US colonies where the slaves were used as a source of free labor, mainly in the Southern parts of the country, and some were used as mistresses of wealthy politicians. So blacks began it, and whites continued the practice until the slaves were freed by Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
