Why is the end of a violin bow called a frog?

My childs School teacher asked.

    The "FROG" is in the body. It is the indentation on the sides which allows motion for the bow.

    Because originally (and possibly still today) it was made from a frog. Not the kind that hops around and goes croak, croak, but the wedge of elastic horny substance in the middle of a horse's hoof, which is called a frog. How it got that name, I have no idea, but that's where the name for the end of the violin bow comes from.
