Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.

We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.

When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.

A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.

Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

i stopped by cutting more and more each day. i also did one funny thing. when i wanted to smoke an extra one, i totally convinced myself that i already had one just now. then i totally convinced myself that if i have one now i ll get sick. gradually, cigarrette's image would give me an association with getting sick (even throwing up lol). to me it's all about psychology. u start believing something and u start feeling it. then in the end, i would just look at a sigarrette, almost light it up, even get that feeling as though i was already smoking, and i would put it down (again, convincing myself that i already had one) and that's it. and the day i completely stopped, i didnt throw out any lighters or remaining sigarrettes (like many ppl do and i think it's a mistake, cuase u want something u can't get or c every day). so i got used to the fact that they were there and i didn't want them cause i said to myself that i have them right beside me and i can start any time i want but not now and i don't need it. anyway i know it's funny but maybe some tips can b useful to u. it took me a month.

to succeed you really have to want to quit.. you can't quit if you don't won't to, so take it slow day by day.. when you want to smoke try drinking water instead or eat something hot like spicey hot, this is where the weight gain comes in. or to fight both weight gain and cravings instead of having a smoke have a nice mexican meal and rest a bit then take a walk or go for a bike ride or jog. then over a period of time after not thinking of smoking and staying away from people that do, the cravings will go away... friend and family support helps to.

I have heard orange juice helps, i quit 8 months ago cold turkey other than the health benifits my biggest incentive was the extra money, if i had of used other methods that cost as much as smoking I would probably be smoking still. good luck best thing you can do for yourself

don't think about it. quitting I mean. just let it happen. if youa re trying to quit by saying that this cigarette or this pack is my last and then it's over; don't, cuz it ain't gonna happen. Smoking is all mental. certain times, certain places, certain events etc all trigger your desire to smoke. the nicotine you can overcome with patches or gum or whatever but that's really not the issue here. it's the mental dependancy you have that is the reall killer. so if you wanna stop, don't plan on it. just kind of let it happen.

Wellbutrin helped me smoke less, and I did quit for a while, but I quit everything sooner or later,I quit the Wellbutrin,so I started smoking again.I've tried it off and on,but you have to be ready to quit for it to work.Guess I wasn't ready yet.Funny how one has to be ready to stop doing something so stupid in the first place, but it is hard.At least for most people.I commend those that have quit and stayed off them.Good luck.

i quit with my gf, and what we did was everytime we wanted a smoke, and were around each other we had sex. you would think that that would make us want to smoke more, but we just kept doing it till we were too tired to even lift a smoke. LOTS OF FUN! when we wern't around each other we would chew gum

The patch worked great for me. You can also get prescriptions from your doctor. I think they are using Welbutrin now.

Don't take anything. Just quit. That's what I did. It's not as bad as you think it's gonna be.
