Why “cash cow” means making a profit？

The term developed from the fact that a single cow could transform a a rural family’s lifestyle into one of prosperity. This was accomplished by using a cow to basically turn grass into money. Money through the sale of milk, beef, leather... basically anything you can use a cow for. And since cows can reproduce they can provide a constant flow of money so to speak. Therefore the term "cash cow" was created and is now used in business to describe and investment/product that provides a steady stream of income.
