Why do Republicans claim Reagan tore down the Berlin wall...when the Germans tore it down?

I didn't see Reagan or Bush tearing down the wall.

I saw brave Germans dismantling the wall!!

The communist system failed, not because of any President! It failed because it was a godless, corrupt, failed system. And it's time was over.

Reagan had nothing to do with it. Why praise him?

Update:

If the Germans would of waited for ANY government to tear down the wall....it would still be standing!

Update 2:

I didn't see a single Republican, Ronald Reagan, or George Bush taking a sledgehammer to that wall. The people themselves did it.

Well, Republicans have to look hard to find anything that he did right. So it's easy to look at something that went right somewhere else in the world and act like it was Regan's doing.

True, neither Reagan nor Bush picked up a sledgehammer. So what? If it hadn't been for Reagan's policies bankrupting the Soviet Union, the people would never have had the fortitude to tear it down. If not for Reagan, had the people tried to tear down the wall they would have been shot by Soviet soldiers. Regan's policies created the atmosphere within which people could feel like it was time to tear down the wall and reunify Germany.

Reagan's call, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" was a defining moment. Yes, it was the Germans who literally tore down the wall, but Reagan declared the American President was publicly calling for an end to Communism, and pledged support to the forces that would end it.

Reagan made defeating communism a primary goal. He increased defense spending by 25%, including significant investments in nuclear weapons which posed an economic challenge to the Soviet Union. This compelled Moscow to attempt to compete. In effect it served to bankrupt the Soviet Union.

The wall stood in place for over 40 years with out any Germans tearing it down. Due to the enonomics of communism itself the EAST GERMAN govenment and the communists of Russia just ran out of money. It was the retortic of President Reagan and the spending of his policies that help collapes the communist soceity of the East Germans and Russian. Reagan is given this praise because he was the one that promoted the policies to end that cold war.

Reagan was the instrument that allowed the wall to be taken down. If the cold war had not ended, then that wall would still be there and I can pretty much guarantee that the Russians would have gladly shot any German getting near the wall with a wrecker ball.

The communist system failed because they tried to keep up with Reagan.

Democrats and Republicans prior to Reagan both tried to appease them. But Reagan stood up to them..Reagan knew the strength of the American economy and of our better technology. And instead of being nervous and careful to not offend them, Reagan got in their face.

Also, the fall of the Berlin wall and collapse of the Soviet regime really got its start with Lech Walsea and the unions in Poland.

Do you think the Germans just woke up one day and decided to tear down the wall? Reagan started a spending war with the Russians, and won. When they couldn't keep up, their system collapsed. Score one for Reagan.

    I can explain.

Reagan's powerful voice and determined will made little cracks in the infrastructure of the wall. That's why it took several years from the time of Reagan's declaration until the wall weakened sufficiently to actually fall. You may have seen Germans "tearing" down the wall, but the godly Reagan was the prime mover, the first cause that made the cracks that enabled humans to tear down that wall!

well, the cold war was won (without bloodshed, or detonation of nuclear weapons) with the help of Reagan's policies to bankrupt the soviet union. The fall of the Berlin wall followed. Bush 2 could have learned some great lessons from republican history...as well as many lessons from those who were there, and fought. Like Colin Powell...but he has chosen to go it alone, without the help of the international community, or even washington. Shame...

Raygun had lost his brain to Alzheimer's long before the wall came down. Deutsche Bank was the key to reuniting Germany.

Raygun was never a Bonesman His policies stimulated the Japanese economy.

My Bonsmen only tap those of exemplary abilities. We would have never launched "trickle down voodoo economics" That was the evil spawn of the Raygun family Sorceress Joan Quigley.

Reagan's policies pushed the Soviet system to the brink. They had to expend much more effort to counter what Reagan was doing, particularly with SDI, than they had the capacity for. High ranking former Soviet officials have admitted that it was Reagan's policies that directly led to the collapse.
