I think we should at least give consideration to what others think because it's just the neighborly thing to do. Just as you may give reasonable consideration to what the neighbors next door may think, likewise we should consider what other countries think as the world is a small place and it is quite possible that we may be wrong about something or not have the same experience as does another country. For example, the French warned Kennedy about Vietnam as they'd spent 8 years there so knew what they were talking about. Would've saved us a lot of lives and money had we stayed out of that war.

That being said, I think that we should get out of the UN. I think it's a waste of money and doesn't really accomplish much. I'd rather spend the tax dollars we give to the UN in our own hemisphere.

Every country should put its own security first.

And as long as possible, do so through the international community. This may not be significant now, at a time when the US can go it alone, however at other times, it helps to have that support.

For example, in the invasion the US went it alone and did alright.

But in the reconstruction, where the other nationas would be valuable in sharing some of the burden, it becomes hard to turn to these guys who have been alienated.

In the end, the US carries the burden of heavy costs on the budget, as well as troop losses- which could have been shared.

While I want to agree with you, you have to realistic. Iraq has proven one thing. Modern wars aren't just about military power. They are also about PR. US could level Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, in very short time. But what would that get us? Israel could totally wipe out Hezbollah, but at a great cost to Lebanon. With the information age, those actions would only increase the hostilities toward free societies. I don't mean to sound like a liberal, I'm not. But we have to take a higher ground and also win support from other countries. The UN is a disfunctional organization, but we have to work with them, so we can gain political support. Hopefully, the UN can get some real leadership and start helping in the effort to eliminate the dictatorships and tyrants.

We should weigh in on what others think. We should not base decisions entirely on them, though. I don't think that we should comprimise the values of Americans to appease someone else. Who to say who is right? History will tell. You have to do what you think is best for your people and the world. I don't seem to remember so much opposition to our current situation until after the fact. We've gone from having 2 parties who disagree on most things but want what's good for the country to such devisiveness. Attacking for posture, not for what is necessarily right.

You're quite right, China has never given a rats about what people think about them. Yet 6 months after Tiannamin Square, after much hand-wringing of course, we were playing ping pong with the Commie swines.

The U.S. doesn't really care what any country thinks of us, nor do they care, as they have publicly demonstrated, what its own people think. Do you really think that before making a huge and very important decision they would stop to consider the thoughts of its own citizens? "Mr. President, before you sign that, what would the people think or say?" Bush would respond with, "Ahhh, f_ck them!! You really think I care?"

Source(s): I saw bush walk into the department store and bought a book called, "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Hitler, But Were Afraid To Ask"

    Maybe they are right sometimes.

    Afghanistan was self defense.

We never should have gone into Iraq. It is wrong to take the first hostile action.
