What are some signs of a mild or harsh winter?

The oldtimers say there's a lot of wool on the sheep when it's going to be a hard winter.

We have the wooly worm theory. The more dark bands, the harsher the winter. I've heard the sheep thing, too.

you can cut a persimmen seed open, and if it looks like a spoon/shovel, then it is going to be a hard winter, though I think that it is just a old wives tale.

You can tell if it is going to rain alot, or just a little by looking at chickens.... if they stay in the rain, get your raincoat, if they go in... it will be over in a minute.
