I am looking for some info on a power commander?

so here is the problem a buddy of mine is having he has got a 05 636 that keeps shutting off on him and after many hours of reading the $70 kawi book we have found that the ECU has gone bad it is only sending 2.5 - 3.1 Vdc to the TPS where it should be 8 - 10 Vdc the ECU is is about $700 now the question is if or when you buy a power commander does it replace the ECU or does it just add on to the computer i was wondering if it replaces it or not due to the cost of a computer as apposed to a power commander

The computer handles engine mangement. like switch position and engine temp. The power commander only regulates fuel delivery.
