It really depends on the subject matter that you lie about. The subject matter can include such things as:

    1. Falsely reporting a crime.

    2. Knowingly making a false statement re. a crime.

    3. Identifying yourself with a false name.

    4. Providing false information that causes someone else to be arrested charged for something they didn't do.

I dont't know what other word you may be thinking of.

It's called "false info to a police officer" and you can be taken to jail for this crime. We get lots of people on this charge just as much as drug charges. It's a common thing here.

In Mississippi it's called Providing False Information to a Law Enforcement Officer, it is a misdemeanor, and really just irritates me.

It all depends on what you lie about. If you give them a fake name, you can be arrested for providing false information. If you lie and say you don't have a kilo of coke in your trunk, they will look anyway, because they wouldn't have asked if the K9 unit wasn't already flipping out. When they find it, you're going to be arrested for felony drug possession.
