How can anyone afford to live in Manhattan?

With a normal rent around 2k (or more) for an apartment, how can someone with a regular income afford to live in Manhattan? I'd love to move there, but I'm used to paying a third of that and getting to live alone in a nice place! I understand that my income would rise somewhat if I moved there, but I still don't see how the numbers line up.

Most "regular income" folks in Manhattan have been there for most of their life and got into subsidized Mitchell-Lama housing, HUD housing or a rent stabilized unit back when the possibility existed (50's, 60's and early 70's).

Up until 1984 I had a rent stabilized apartment on Second Avenue for $350 per month.

NYC is a great place to live, but it is out of reach for most average wage earners coming to live in the city for the first time.

You can do it if you don't mind living in a closet (literally) and paying the bulk of your wages for rent.

It doesn't add up. Manhattan is the most expensive place to live in the US, at approximately 2500 for a 2 bedroom. San Francisco (where I live) comes in second at 1750. To live in these areas you have to make sacrifices including getting smaller living spaces and eventually living off of less. My friends that managed to live in NYC got a bedroom with multiple room mates in a rent controlled apartment.

No on account which you will start up working, in case you even get a artwork visa, on the backside of the pay scale. you would be earning only above minimum salary until eventually finally you pass by way of an internship and residency

there are 3 ways, make a lot of money, make no money and get an apartment paid for by welfare, or live in a shoebox with roommates like most Manhattanites.

I wasn't able to stay. I have a sibling there - they're rich, to be blunt about it, and they're watching their "normal" middle class friends all move out and leave them behind for exactly the reason you say.
