Good question. Several come to mind. How about Lawrence Taylor, Dick Butkus, Jack Tatum, Ronnie Lott, Deacon Jones? I'm going with Butkus, a real terror who had speed and made many a running back pay dearly for their yardage against the Bears.

It's hard to say, because the equipment and size of players have changed in time. To make my point, the forward pass was put into the rules because the hits were so brutal, that people were literally dieing from them. There weren't even helmets in those days, but death is as hard as you are going to get.

Jack Tatum, if you went into Jack's part of the field you you were going to get hit, HARD. Ronnie Lott said he patterned his style of play after Tatum's.

Dick Butkus of the Bears was an intimidating fierce animal at middle linebacker and probably the most famous football player of all time.

Mike Singletary broke like 3 helmets in college...

I also like Butkus, Lott, and Steve Atwater.

There's been lots of great ones already mentioned. The first name that came to my head was Ronnie Lott.

Jack Tatum or Bill Rowmanoski. Bill was the craziest and dirtiest if they have a category for that!
