ACK when will people learn NO BOSE! That system in the previous answer from target is comparable to a $200 system from any other manufacturer.

System implies receiver and speakers, you supply the DVD for this price range.

    Speakers: Infinity TSS-750 $500 (5 speakers + powered sub)

    Receiver: Denon AVR-1507 $330

This is for 5.1 at $830, the receiver will do 7.1 with two more speakers. Spend more on speakers than the Receiver, they make more of a difference. You should be able to find this stuff cheaper if you search around.

If you step up to the $1500 range then your options open up greatly.

yamaha or onkyo...period. don't buy sony, they suck at sound systems. panasonic is fairly good but if you want power, onkyo and yamaha are the best.
