Russia is still a regional power. There is no convincing need for the Russians to possess global power projection in the manner of the past. Superpower status does not come without its problems. Dealing with client states and bankrolling allies is expensive and often counterproductive.

    (1) Russia needs to sort out rule of law. It doesn't have any at the moment, so corruption is rampant, and oligarchy takes the place of participatory democracy. Without accountability to the people, everything from rape of resources to trafficking of women and children is present. This is unacceptable.

    (2) Russia needs to develop its infrastructure - not just physical, but its people. The brain drain is unconscionable, and there isn't a middle class worth the name to support a functioning economy or provide educated citizens for civic government and military service. When Russia invests in its people and communities, it will prosper.

    (3) Russia needs to sort out is territorial issues. Whether it is a unitary state or a Federation is moot. It can't keep Chechnya and it can't keep on playing neighbors against neighbors (witness the trouble with Georgia). It needs territorial integrity and it needs a sense of nation identity that either encompasses minorities such as the Tajiks and Uzbeks that are present in large numbers still, or accomodates them without producing an environment that is conducive to hate crimes.

Russia has advantages in geography, resources, and the resilience of its people that it has not developed to its full potential. Someday, it will be once again a great state, known for its vibrant culture and the beauty of its lands, not for Stalinism, not for Lubyanka.

    Someday.

They are already getting there!! They are becoming major suppliers of gas and other commodities to Europe and Scandinavia. They are embracing capitalism whilst at the same time working to prevent the problems and excesses of the Western Capitalist system.

At the same time they are talking to other countries and debating values with them. They are offering leadership and not dictating to them.

Compare that to what America is doing in dictating policy to the world and the UN. Forcing through trade deals that are detrimental to their allies and serve only the US interest. There is no sign of any effort by the US to offer leadership. On top of that these policies and dictatorial actions making so many countries and people anti American.

Unless America does some growing up and starts to give leadership instead of dictation and accept equitable trade deals then not only is Russia likely to become a super power again it stands a very real chance of uniting the rest of the world in fair trade deals and open and honest debate which would make it "The Superpower"!!!!!

Possibly...but first they will have to remove the following:

1.) Corruption...ever notice why despite all their oil/mineral wealth many Russians still are not living well and why their Military still languishes while their best weapons are sold to other countries?

2.) Communism... while no longer the same threat as the former USSR's Communist Party...from the last elections it seems that the Commies still hold a significant segment of the population under their sway.

3.) Ignorance and poverty (related to the other two)

Once that happens then possibly Russia can regain her status as a superpower....

Nobody should write-off Russia. The current events suggests that they could rise again. What has affected Russia badly was the fact that communism did not bring about good bussiness relations with other countries. With their gradual emancipation into capitalism and their vast oil resources, they could one day threaten America again.

And folks pray that that doesnt happen. Because if it does, with the present battered image of America worldwide, Russia would easily become the alternative superpower everybody want to trade with.

Russia will never ever become a superpower. Rather, it might be split into independent Siberia and Tartarya

u.s.'s superpower status is in accordance with industrialization/ banking/ globalization, no longer purely protection stress ought to. Russia is and consistently would be a extensive land mass with great organic components. occasion: oil reserves and holding agriculture. Its protection stress continues to be impressive. on the cost the U. S. is going, being on the instant's purely superpower is shaky. look at China to take on the placement of "superpower" in accordance with their extensive proportion human beings economic notes as properly as taking over a extensive place in international banking.

IF they move toward capitalism and freedom!

If they copied after America, they would be a real superpower in a few years.

They have the natural resources, but do they have the willpower?

Russia has enormous riches, including oil and minerals. If and only if it can suppress its culture of corruption it could be the strongest country in the world . . . after the USA bankrupts itself with its enormous foreign debt and its prodigality of energy, exhausting its own oil reserves.
