It would be bad to turn off your computer and back on many times during the day. But once a day is not bad.

Consider these regular maintenance tasks that you initiate.

    - check anti-spyware software, update and run scans

    - check anti-virus software, update and run scans

    - run Disk Cleanup (from Programs - Accessories - System Tools)

    - run Defrag (from Programs - Accessories - System Tools)

    - backup your data

    - Disk Tests - from My Computer, right click on C drive and pick PROPERTIES, then click TOOLs and Check Disk. Allow it to run after restarting. Allow about an hour for this.

Turning off your computer each night is not bad. What is hard on the computer, over time, is the wear and tear on the 'on' button, which is usually located on your hard drive. The expanding and contracting of internal components take less wear and tear than the 'on' button does. Also, some people turn the computer back on before the computer has a chance to shut completely down and stay off for a couple of seconds. Other than that, your computer needs to rest. Having it on all the time isn't good. I have had my computer for 5 years and it starts acting funny and programs glitch if I keep it on for days. Its like a brain, oddly enough. Just like Demun, I do place my computer on stand by often. I would like to hear anything different or if I am wrong.

No it's not bad, Leaving your computer 24/7, 365 days a year is really really bad. Thinking about how it could damage the screen with the heat and everything. Ok, let's face it, you only have more on electricity. True, some people leave their computer on whole day, whole night, but i can't see why you need to leave it on while you are not using it..... I don't believe in leaving computer on.

Not true. Turn it off when you're not using it. Oh, and turn off the monitor too -- it's a separate switch, and it uses electricity.

Now, you should keep your computer ON all the time if it's running a Web site, or conducting a search, or something else. But by and large, it's fine to turn your computer off when you go to bed.

I turn mine off every night. I also turn off my computer at work every night. Not only does it not hurt your computer, it can help. You get a fresh boot, you save wear on the power supply and fans, etc., and on top of all that you save money. The power savings from turning your computer off at night, especially if you still have a crt monitor, can add up to quite a savings.

This is a limited answer. Not bad just inconvenient. You don't have to go through a bootup or startup process for one thing with the attendant possible problems that may cause. My store tells me that a PC only uses about the equivalent electricity of a 60 watt bulb so I quit worrying about that.

Yes and no. Leaving your computer on is better than turning it off every night. After the computer is turned on it heats up and everything expands but a fan keeps it from overheating.

Now if you shut your computer off it "cools down" then it will heat up again once you turn it on. Just like a car starting it is the hardest thing on the components as they are heated (expanding them) and cooling on shut down (contracting).

One analogy is -->Concrete cracks when it is heated and cooled. Similar conditions.

My computer is 3 years old and I usually turn it off every day. But at work most of our computers are always left on but we turn the monitors off. They work just fine.

i've been using the same computer i've built in 1998, and been shutting it down every night since. no problems. i only upgraded the hard drives, and memory. ok, actually the motherboard died a few months ago, and i had to swap it out, but nothing really bad will happen to your computer. many don't even make it as long as mine.

Bad things can happen to your electricity bill if you DON'T turn it off at night. Since my son moved his 2 pcs to his office, my electricity bill has gone down about $15 a month.
