constipation is a very common problem in infants. keep giving him low iron formula. you can also stimulate his rectum with a thermometer-very gently. Get some Karo syrup and place a small amount of this in his bottle with a couple of his feedings. Rub his belly and try some mylicon drops if he apperars to be gassy-with your doctors permission. Good luck-it will get better.

Two old time remedies that helped my kids when they were that young.

    1. Rub some kayro (corn syurp) (it does not have to be name brand but choose the light variety) syurp on their gums or add it to the bottle, if your baby is under 10 lbs 1teaspoon should do it. It will take about 5 to 10 hours to take effect. (you can also add about 1/2 teaspoon to each bottle to keep him regular) Just make sure you wipe his gums after each bottle with a clean warm cloth so when his teeth come in they are in good condition

    2. If your child has not had a bowel movement in a while and you are worried you can use a piece of Ivory soap. Slice a small sliver off of the bar with a knife (about 3 times the size of a toothpick width, about 1/2 long), using your fingers and warm water rub the sides and ends to smooth it out (you do not want any sharp edges). Insert into the rectum (butt hole). You can hold it in or push it in and leave it. Depending on the severity of the constipation it will fix the problem between immediately and 1/2 hour. The soap also lubes the area so that it is not so painful.

If your son, is still having problems after a week or so on the low iron formula, I would suggest switching to a no iron formula and see if that helps.

I had the same prob with my son. Our ped. recomended mixing 1oz water w/1 tsp. DARK Karo syrup and feeding it to him 1-2 time per day until he was old enough for solid food/juice. My son also had problems "getting going", so the doc said to put a little petrolium jelly on a q-tip and gentley swirl just to get him started. Now we make sure he has some prunes or apple juice every day because he still gets constipation problems if we don't. (he's 9 months now). Also, if you can afford it try pre-mixed formula. It seemed to be better on my sons tummy. And I think he liked it a little better. We would give him powdered until the can was gone then premixed until that can was gone and so on. Going back and forth didn't seem to bother him and we always bought the same brand. Hope this helps!

My first born was always constipated up until 4 years old. The doctor told me to do the Karro syrup w/water (although I would check with that since he is only 1 month old) but the clycerin suppository is reccomended, which you just get these little glycerin tube like shaped, and insert it through the rectum, it should work relatively quickly, you might want to be prepared with a pad under him, it could get pretty messy, I know it will be hard to put him through it, but he will feel better afterward.

Oldy but goody.....distilled water and a tablespoon of Karo Syrup will do the trick everytime. The problem is, you're listening to the doctor's....they tell you no water until 3 months....that's total bs.....give the baby at least an ounce or two of water at least every other day and he'll be just fine. Another thing you can try is a little prune juice mixed with water.

sugar water, oh no......1/2 ounce of water and a 1/2 ounce of apple juice. Thats what I did for my daughter at that age, they are much too little for sugar water. Also switch to gentlease formula he may not be allergic to formula you never know unless you try. It's also suppose to digest easier and get rid of the gas. My daughter loves it and I only wish it was around when I had my son.

My daughter struggled w/ constipation when she was a baby. My pediatrician recommended mixing about an ounce of prune juice w/ her bottles. Also, if your doctor approves, pears and peaches help ease constipation. But above all, my advice would be to consult your pediatrician!!

my daughter was always constipated the doctor suggested gently using a warm rectal thermometer to break things up and it always worked and keep using low iron formula this is very common no need to bother the doctor because a mom always knows better

It is normal for babies who aren't getting solids to go up to 7 days without having a poop. No worries, my daughter goes 3 or 4 days sometimes. Hope this helps.

Here's a helpful website. It says that around 1 or 2 months babies bowelmovemts slow down to one every few days. No worries.
