One of the consequences was the end of most of the old system of monarchy in Europe. Other types of leaders came forward, beginning with Napoleon, and leading to leaders who were considered dictators in many other countries. These new leaders weren't necessarily better than the ones of the past.

It paved the way for Napoleon to take over and make people feel better about being French. That's what happens in countries where people feel that chaos is all around them -- they grasp at the straws of totalitarianism.
