What does cult-classic mean when people are talking about movies?

I've heard this term used with movies like "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Snakes on a Plane"

A cult film has a small but dedicated following (think Rocky horror picture show). If it stay popular through the years it is considered a classic.

It means that it does not have a following in the mainstream sense, but that there is a select group of people who are fans of the film or even rock band.
