Is not bathing but maybe once every month a sign of mental illness?

Update:

I have a family member who will not bathe nor brush his teeth. The last time his teeth were brushed was on May 20,2006! He only has 9 teeth left, which are rotting. When he does bathe, maybe 1 time a month, he uses no soap nor shampoo and smells like a dirty wet dog.

if you aren't taking care of yourself, that can be a sign that there is some underlying mental problems.

IN some books, a lack of respect for proper personal hygeine is a sign of some disturbance. But, you nee to see other signs as well- are there mood problems, and most importantly, SOCIAL problems? Does this person endanger their social life due to their hygeine habits, but not care about it?

Are there any other problems, such as do they brush their hair? Brush their teeth? Do they wash and wear clean clothes everyday? This would indicate that indeed there may be something going on. One habit alone isn't very indicative, unfortunately, especially if the person shows no emotional upset along with their habit.

    Good luck. :)

Not bathing regularly is not a state of Mental Illness, but can be detrimental to yourself as your personal hygiene will be bad, however if you wash everyday its really irrelevant whether its a bath you have, shower or wash.

Or do you have any other reasons for not wanting to have a bath, if so they need to be addressed, resolved and acted upon.

It possibly could be. Is your relative a highly functioning person? If he isn't then coupled with the lack of hygiene he could be having a problem. Is he old? He might be a bit senile. Also old people tend to have more trouble with the ACTIVITY of bathing due to becoming feeble. Lots of other factors to be considered.

yes, it is a sign of depression. When we do not take care of our personal needs we in a sense our saying we do not care about ourselves. You need to seek help from a doctor or mental facility that can give you a diagnosis. Medication may be the answer to helping you feel better about yourself.

If this is a serious question, then yes. It can be caused by many different illnesses, Bi-polar also known as manic depression is what I am leaning towards. I would see a Doctor asap, cause stinky isnt good.

It is a sign of very bad personal hygiene. Don't hide behind a mental health issue. Just bathe dammit, the poor people around you!!!!~!!!!!

I have a sister who has mental health problems and personal hygiene doesn't come naturally to her. It depends on your situation though.

maybe he feels so f*cking down on himself that he's subconciously decided that he doesnt deserve to look good, smell good and feel good and thus lost the motivation to look after himself
