Depending on the type of dye you use. The permanent dyes on the market are more harsh and medically speaking, be aware that the skin is an organ and many medications are delivered transdermally. (through the skin) Think of the nicotine and birth control patches...

Semi-permanent dyes or "vegetable" based dyes, such as henna are less likely to contain harsh chemicals, although an allergic reaction is possible. There is a reason for the over the counter dyes telling you to do a sensitivity test 24 hours before you put the stuff all over your head. Also, DO NOT COLOR OVER COLOR if you mess it up. I have seen actual scabs on someone's head from chemical burns resulting in double processing. Do yourself and your scalp a favor and go to a professional. Also...they tell pregnant women not to color because it isn't a good idea for the baby. That alone would tell me that something must be absorbing through the scalp. PS...you didn't specify WHERE you were thinking of coloring...ammonia burns like fire on mucous membranes and only an idiot would put it anywhere near their eyes or any other orfices...again...call a professional colorist.

Yes, but very few. Taking a walk when a car passes by is many times more toxic.
