Humans have 23 chromosomes. Rather than write an essay, I'll refer you to the excellent essay at Wikipedia.

There are 22 pairs of chromosomes, identified as A through V. Before the 1960's, scientists thought that there were 24 pairs, labeled A through X. However, "X" turned out to be two different chromosome pairs that determined sex. So, Chromosome W was replaced by either an X chromosome or a Y chromosome. X is carried only by women, and men can carry either an X or a Y (and that's what probably accounted for the error).

Consequently, we now know that we have 23 pairs of chromosomes, A through V and an X or a Y.
