Sometimes it's just a fact of life that good singers do get voted out. Maybe they can't relate to the audience, maybe their supporters are not as die-hard as the others or maybe they simply do not have enough star power. Cases in point: Jeassea from SI 1, Chris Tucker & Mandisa from last season's AI. It hurts, but it does happen.
On the other hand, I agree that the voting in SI this time around is beyond ridiculous. What was already a very average group of singers in the beginning of the show has now reached to a new level of low. -Honestly-, look at the remaining contestants.. and can you imagine buying any of their CDs in the future?
And to answer the question posed: No, I don't think the voters are deaf nor stupid. Unless of course, you equals blind loyalty to stupidity. I would say that most of the votes for the SI contestants come from their families and friends, and Singapore is so small that these votes become so vital. In AI, all contestants will get votes from their family and friends too, but as time passes by, votes by -objective- viewers will outweigh all the blind votes.
This is made worse by the fact that many Singaporeans just cannot be bothered to vote, so only the die-hard fans will vote and thus keep their unworthy idols in the race. (Yep, I'm one of those who don't see the point in voting). I am a big fan of AI, I watched SI Season 1 and thought Taufik deserved to win, but I have given up watching this season's SI quite a while ago. And somehow I feel that my apathy is justified whenever I read the latest SI news in the paper: Jay out, Mathilda out.. good job, Singapore.
I foresee that it's going to be a vicious cycle for SI: substandard talent as contestants + blind votes > substandard SI winner with no future cos he/she has no real talent > the real talents see no point in joining SI > only substandard talents take part in SI. Seriously, is there any point in having SI?
Last grouse, the SI judges are getting worse. Hardly any of them give constructive comments and Ja must be the worst ever judge in Idol history. She might be a great singer and she looks great on TV, but it might be better for everyone if she just keeps quiet.
It seems that for a supposedly indifferent person, I have given quite a lengthy answer (sry!). I guess I still care after all and I get oh-so-frustrated too when I see how inferior SI is compared to AI.
