Why are the country abbreviations for Switzerland SUI?

Shouldn't it be SWI, or USA for United States of America

    SUI = Suisse

    Suisse is french for Swiss.

    The Swiss Confederation or Switzerland is a landlocked federal state in Europe, which borders Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. The country has a strong tradition of political and military neutrality, but also of international co-operation, and is home to many international organisations.

    Hope this helps

    In Switzerland, one of the official languages is French, so the abbreviation is based on the French name for the country, "la Suisse".

    the manufacture of fine precision instruments are important to the Swiss economy, as is tourism from people who enjoy the region's alpine ski slopes. And gangsters' money.

    no it should not, because switzerland is the english name for the country.

    our languages are

    german (schweiz)

    french (suisse)

    italian (svizzera)

    so we choose the french suisse for sui...but we usually adress our country as CH (confederation helvetica) - you'd also say: CHF for swissfrancs...
