Why did God torture Job with terrible of deseases and afflictions for years, just to test his belief ?

(I forget how many years it lasted) Surely he knew in advance?

To me this story is grottesquely immoral and demolishes the Old Testament as a religious book. .

If a father had the medicine for cure, would he be allowed to test his child's love for him in a similar way? He would be labelled a monster and sent to jail for 20 years.

There are many other horror stories in the OT. It is a highly immoral book, completely incompatible with the teachings of the son of God in the New Testament. It should be either expurgated or preferably discarded.

God didn't cause the suffering he merely stood by and did nothing. in our days that would be called depraved indifference. but since the bible was written by people and Job was thought to be written during the exile it makes sense that it would have that tone. how would you get a lot of people to remain faithful when it looks like theres no end in sight? write a story similar to their plight and show that it all worked out in the end as long as he stayed faithful.

    Your reasoning is askew.

    1. God did not torture Job. God allowed Satan permission to test Job, but in His greatness only allowed Satan to go so far. Therefore, even when you go through trials, God will give Satan only so much permission to deal with you. That's how omnipotent He is.

    2. God knew of Job's devotion, and He also had a plan to restore Job to even more greatness.

    3. Contrary to what Marshal says, Christians do not "go by the New Testament", and therefore discard the things of the Old. You should study Christian doctrine much more before making such broad statements, as this is an incorrect assessment of Christian beliefs on the two books.

Here's my take on it: Job was one of God's most faithful. Satan knew this, and challenged God about Job's faithfullness. Job's soul was the prize to the winner in this challenge. God knew Job wouldn't curse Him, which is why he accepted the challenge. In a way, Job was like a pawn, as we all may be during the times of trials and tribulations. The moral of that story was no matter how bad things may get, hold on to your faith, trust and believe in God through it all, and u will be restored from your fall. The story of Job has taken and continues to take place in the lives of many to this very day. Satan was even allowed to tempt Jesus, so what does that tell u? We all will go through a period where our faith will be tested, but what matters the most is how we respond to the test.

The reason God allowed Satan to do these things to Job is because Satan said that he would be able to make Job curse GOD if he could have complete control over him. God allowed Satan to take everything from Job except his life. Satan took his entire family and everything except his life and could not turn Job away from God. He stayed true to his faith in God. God gave him back everything that Satan took away and so much more for being a faithful servant to God no matter what happened to him.

    Job 1

6 One day the angels [a] came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan [b] also came with them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?"

Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."

8 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

9 "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. 10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."

12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger."

Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

THAT's why. God didn't torture him. Satan did.

As for the other "horror" stories, they were to teach and punish before Jesus came to earth to forgive our sins. Before that, EVERY sin had to atoned for.

It is still a book of history and a book of belief for some...but Christians go by the New Testament. you can not get rid of the past, just because you do not like it.

One of the reason is that God wanted to show His glory and His greatness.People like you will not believe what God wanted to do even you see it clearly. No doubt it is the god of this world that has blinded you so that u cannot see.You should repent or soon you will be sent to hell.

If you read Job right, you will see that it was NOT God who "tortured" Job, it was Satan. God only permited that Satan did that, but he also protected him. I do not think the Bible is what you said it is, if you would read it, you would find out for yourself.

God is vain, and likes to show off, but that is tough. The guy had to go through that, and would burn if he said screw this? That is a messed up religion.

But after all Job's children were killed, he did get a replacement set. Hows' that for squaring things?
