You can do with both but I think unpartitioned space is best.

Most distributions (like ubuntu, suse for example) will ask you while installing what you want to do.

Most likely you will also need to create a swap partition and one or more other partitions.

When you want to install Linux, and you know which distribution you want, I'd go to the website of that distribution and read the install manual (there will almost always be one). The manual will tell you what to do and how to chose your partitions.

If you a unpartitioned disk space you can partition it later after booting with your linux setup cd. Even if you partition also yourcan use those space to install linux.

So you can do it either way.

Have a good day & happy linux hunting

  • you have to alocate a partition for it.

either whole disk or different partition of existing operating system
