I do the weather for a local radio station. I have been told that when we have a 50 percent chance of rain or less, then we use the term scattered thunderstorms or scattered showers, meaning that some areas will experience rain or thunderstorms and other areas will not. It is a safe way to predict the weather and not be wrong.....totally.

Let's see. I would say that it means that conditions exist for thunderstorms to occur, but they're not sure where they might occur, or whether they will occur at all. Historically, thunderstorms occur during the time of year they are talking about, so they predict the possibility of "scattered thunderstorms"How's that?

In other words, it doesn't "exactly" mean anything.

They typically use "scattered thunderstorms" when they mean that over the area coverd by the forecast, any particular area will have about a 30-40% change of getting rain. (There are thunderstorms in some places in the forecast area, just not everywhere in the forecast area.)

The term "isolated thunderstorms" is used when they mean 20-30% chance...

    Maybe -- LOL

Scattered thunderstorms mean that there are storms in the area and they may appear in scattered locations. So one town may get a storm but the town right next to it will not.

it means just what is says that there are thunderstorms scattered around the area. it is always possible that it may rain when there is a storm.

Sometimes it could be raining in one part of the city and not another. The storms could go across the top of the state but completely miss the bottom or vice verse.

It might. It means there are a few small spots of rain coming over your area. You may or may not get hit by rain, but if you are not, someone nearby probably is.

It means it'll rain all through the day!Which means it'll take a break from raining every once and a while!
