For mail within the USA, envelopes larger than standard size require 13c extra postage. (If they are over 1 ounce then it goes by weight - the extra is only for envelopes one ounce and under,)

    Here is the information:

    Large Envelope

Use for large envelopes with the dimensions below:

    Height exceeds 6-1/8 inches, or

    Length exceeds 11-1/2 inches, or

    Thickness exceeds 1/4 inch

Length is the dimension parallel to the address.

    Nonmachinable Surcharge:

First-Class large envelopes weighing 1 ounce or less require an additional $0.13 nonmachinable surcharge.

Well first you need to know where the mail is going if it's internationl you use an internatiol stamp local local stamp. Also using 1 or 2 stamps depends on the weith of the package or mail.

    go to

They have a weight table that tells you. Just guess the weight. If you want, do what I do. Just throw 2 stamps on for good measure. It's only 37 cents and it will get there for sure.

  • if this helps.... 10 sheets of paper will work for one stamp. so if its heavier than 10 sheets of paper use 2.

on second thought just use 2 and avoid the hassle of maybe having it sent back.

also, a lot of post offices have a scale in the lobby to tell you (or you can wait for a person).

You can take it to the post office, where they will weigh it for you and tell you the amount of stamps to be used. It also depend on where you want to post it to, If its within your country or state or outside .

depends where you live, in the UK they've just introduced a new system that means it costs more to post a big envelope.

If you take it down to the post office they'll tell you.

Otherwise, just put 2 stamps on anyway.

You can tell by the weight. You should go to the post office to make sure you put enough postage on it. You don't want it to come back. But, if you can't get to the post office its always better to put too much then too little.

I imagine rules vary country to country, but basically both weight and size affect the cost of postage. Your best bet is to take it to the post office, they have a grid they size parcels on as well as a scale to weigh them.

Take it to the post office to mail it and have them check it or put two on to be safe.
