Do not learn something you do not like. YOu still have 3 years more to go in something you do not like.

But before you stop.. first do some research about what you want to study.. real research.. go see the department you want to join.. and see if that what you really like and expect..

If you still have 3 years to finish your degree in mechanical engineering, then you have a few choices:

    1. Switch majors to biology. If you won't be satisfied as an engineer, you might be satisfied as a biologist.

    2. Take a minor in biology, even if it means taking an extra semester or two to finish.

    3. Become a mechanical engineer and work on problems related to wildlife and the environment

    4. Take courses in biology as your electives.

    5. Complete your engineering degree, then get a master's degree in biology.

That's a lot of choices, and understandably confusing. You will have to start concentrating on mechanical engineering pretty soon, as the specialized training starts pretty soon.

There is nothing wrong with being a more rounded engineer. Biology will complement your mechanical engineering in ways that you can only imagine.

Many engineering students don't follow any other paths and end up being just plain old engineers. The good ones also have outside passions. Actually, that goes for any field, but somehow it is particularly pertinent to engineers.

    Good luck. Follow your heart.

Can you be happy being a forest ranger or other outdoor conservationist? Does not pay very well. Engineering is a very rewarding career on the other hand. Even with an engineering degree you can always become a forest ranger or wild life observer. Very difficult to do it the other way around. Would you drive a car designed by a tree hugger or someone with a degree with engineering? Can an engineer give it all up and hug a tree?

If you are not sure try taking some classes in what interests you. You could also get a job or an internship in ME and see how it goes, or one working in wildlife or forestry and see how that goes. Ultimately it could come down to a choice in money MEs make a lot more then Biologists. You could work as an engineer, and be outside as a hobby.

Change it then. If you are already feeling that it's not the right thing, you should go with what you want. Don't let other's expectaitons determine your life.

You could also look into engineering with an environmental bent to it such as specializing in water purification, land mangement etc.
