This is a hotbed question...it has been asked many times in the lower south and has been challenged in courts of law from Virginia to Texas. The query is not really one of flying the Confederate Jack on a public flag pole, rather it is the symbolism behind this flag.....

If you look at the history of flags in general, you will find that they represent or symbolize a particular group...NOT what this group stands for or believes. The swastika for example was used by the Roman Empire centuries before the Nazi Party used it. The Confederate Jack (the proper name for the most notable flag) is resembling the Union Jack of the United Kingdom.

Who is going to police the symbolism of a particular flag or banner? Mind you, I am not a racists or a confederate sympathizer...I am a former history teacher that believes that history is there to remind us of our heritage and give us lessons to be adhered too. Not to bring up old wounds between races or continue to figuratively rub salt into these wounds.

It is a symbol of the OLD South and should not be flown on public flagpoles. But I also believe that some people are being over zealous about their resentments...History is History and can not be changed....the politically correcting of our history is wrong...in those places where the Confederate Jack is being flown publically, this is just part of their history and nothing is sinister or racists is being meant by this exhibition......

I am Caucasian and have a degree in history, and I am very offended by confederate flags. It was a terrible time in history and the flag has been used by the KKK and other racist groups since then. I think people need to learn the history behind it. I'm not saying that everyone who flies one is racist, but they should realize it has become a symbol of racism. So yes, a museum would be a great place for it. Everyone needs to remember their history, but it's time for the South to find a new symbol.

I've lived in the South and I can tell you that many Southerners do fly the flag out of Southern Pride and with no racial intent. There are those, however, who do fly it because of the racial overtones. They do distort the meaning of the flag- and yes, the civil war was about more than just slavery. You won't read in history books how free blacks willingly fought for the South.

Still, I think because a large portion of the population finds the flag offensive(and many of those who do are white), the flag should not be flown on public, government flagpoles.

The Confederate Flag, absolutely, should remain in a museum. In fact, I believe that neither the Nazi flag nor the Confederate flag should be allowed flown. They need to be remembered as some of our mistakes as human beings. If we don't remember our mistakes, we will have a tendency of repeating them.

Flying the Confederate flag is wrong, but would you allow a descendent of a Cofederate slave to move next door to you or date your daughter?

The flag has alot of history and I think any American has the right to fly the flag of his/her choice.

I think so, even though I had relatives fight in it. In addition to the racial overtones, which many blacks are justifiably offended by, this was an attempt to leave the United States by splitting it. I think it's anti-American to have it as a state flag.

It does seem strange that some organizations or people would fly a flag symbolizing rebellion and slavery. I certainly don't favor its being flown.
