What is the American depositary receipt, or ADR?
I have to write a paper about it and still have no idea exactly what it is. Any help or idea would be appreciated.

An ADR represents shares of an overseas company which are listed in the US markets for trade, making them very similar to shares of US companies.
So when investors in the US buy and sell ADRs, in effect, they are buying a proxy document for the underlying shares.
