How much powdered onion equals a whole onion? Is there an equivalency chart I can look at?

I have to use powdered onion in my recipes instead of 'real' onion, so how do I convert? If the recipes calls for one medium onion, how much powder do I use? I need an equivalency chart.

I've used onion powder, but never enough to equal an onion! I'd hate to suggest using a whole lot - seems that hurt the recipe..
