What are the circumstances when he barks? Is it on a leash walk? when someone comes into the house? When the dog hears somebody outside? When you meet somebody? At the dog park? There are lots of techniques that can be as simple as giving everybody who comes into your house a yummy treat to toss at your pup, to telling your dog "Thank you", you've alerted me to the danger, you've done your job, but I have it from here. (in not those words, but by checking the window and letting your dog see you respond to the alert)

If he stops barking after you tell him no and that it's okay then you just need to let it be. A dog's instinct is to bark when something isn't right. If he continues get a little spray bottle like you'd find in the trial size stuff. Fill it with water and 2 Tbsp of the nasty listerine. When he barks spray it at his mouth, not the eyes. If he barks again, do it again. Once he lays down tell him he's good and praise him. Repremands need to be quick, to the point and done with and then forgotten about. A dog won't remember after just a few seconds so you need to do the spray the second the dog does it again after being told no.

A muzzle requires you always havign to put it on or remember to take it off and of course only works once you have it on. My dog got smart to the muzzle never barked when it was on, but did everythime it was off. eBay sells a very humane and inexpensive alternative that can be worn by your dog all day. It is the citronella spray collar. It is the same natural ingrediant used in many baby safe insect repellants. When the dog wears it on their collar and barks, it gives a small puff of this spray at the dogs nose. As long as the dog is wearing it, it will get sprayed everytime that it barks. Safe, easy and humane.

He doing his job too well.

Get it into his head that he does not need to bark at strangers.

I guess it is his way looking for attention.

Make the dog your buddy, but stay the ALPHA.

Teach him to obey by word or sign command.

He will love you for it.

We had several dogs when I was growing up. We used to hold their mouths when they would bark, and tell them " no". They learned quickly, and it did not hurt them by the way. They NEVER barked just because somone was outside. They would growl if somone was walking outside at night. Dogs are very smart and they will learn quickly.

I don't know how but I know why they do it, the dog believes it is it's resposibility to protect the pack. The trick is to somehow teach the dog that it is not it's resposibility. I can give you the cause hoping it may help with a solution.

try an anti-bark collar, if you don't like the idea of shock collars they also sell spray collars that spray a citranella spray. they work very well.

When does he do it? Can he see ppl walking by? Or just when someone comes to see you? Is it annoying the neighbours?
