It is not safe to be near anything that conducts electricity.

If you read what I found below and look at the rest of the article in the link below, you will find out what else is dangerous about lightning. It was interesting.

Level-3: Go to a safer location when required. Don't hesitate; go to a safer place immediately! The safest place commonly available is a large fully enclosed substantially constructed building, e.g. a typical house. Once inside, stay away from any electrical conducting path from the outside, e.g., corded telephones, electrical appliances, and plumbing. If you can't get to a substantial building, a vehicle with a solid metal roof and metal sides is a reasonable second choice. Avoid contact with conducting paths going outside. Convertibles and open-framed vehicles do not count as lightning shelters.

it is only dangerous if you are on a corded phone, but some studies suggest that using a cellphone during a t-storm can increase the risk of being struck by lightning

Mythbusters on Discovery Channel proved that it is dangerous to be on the phone or anything else electric during a storm.

The chances of being hit by lightning are slim, but I don't take the chance.

VERY dangerous...the charge of the telephones wire could be opposite the lightnings charge and the lightning would hit the telephone wire which is connected to the phonejack which is connected to the phone ur using.

If a cordless phone you're OK. If it has a cord between the handset and base, better leave it alone until the storm passes.

Telephone lines are a lightning attractor. See the web site for more storm preparedness details.

Lightning killed my phone, so there must have been some above normal voltage going through it. I've heard of people's TVs blowing up though, and I've seen flames come out of an outlet when lightning struck

If you're on a cord phone, it's probably dangerous.
