How important are climate and erosion in explaining how mountain belts are formed?

I am having a little trouble with this one.

    I don't think climate or erosion has any effect on the formation of mountains. Mountains are formed by tectonic activity (earthquakes, plate tectonics, etc.). Once the raw mountain is there, the climate and erosion will certainly determine how long it will take before the mountains are worn down to nothing again.
