Many of the better jobs require an advanced degree. It used to be a 4 year degree was enough, but that really doesn't apply any more. Depending on the region you live in, it's basically mandatory to have a Master's or more to compete. For example, on the national level 20% of the population has a 4 year degree and 7% has an advanced degree. Here in the Washington, DC area, 60% have a 4 year degree and 40% have an advanced degree. If you live in DC, you have got to have a Masters if you want to compete. But, there are other areas where if you have a H.S. diploma, you're one of the more educated in the area. It depends on your field and region you live in. Be careful cause in some instances, having an advanced degree could make you over-qualified.

Do your research. But, if you live in a large metropolitan area (like New York, Chicago, DC, etc), it's almost a foregone conclusion you'll need at least a masters.
