DVD-R and DVD+R are really the same thing. They are both write-once media. The only real difference between the two is that DVD-R is much better for burning media to play on your home DVD player, since nearly all home DVD players can play DVD-R, and very few can play DVD+R's.

DVD-RW and DVD+RW's are rewritable, and can be written to at least 1,000 times each. In this instance, the +RW's are better, because you can buy much faster disks. I personally use DVD-R's for write-once disks and DVD+RW's for rewritables.
