If they are good-natured smart asses, laugh with them, if they are being disrespectful, punish them for, if it is age-appropriate, a spanking might help. But also discuss why it is rude and why you want them to stop. For young kids reading books about respect may help. One more thing...you might want to check the way you and your spouse speak to each other and to your kids...they probably get the attitude from you.

You have to demand respect from them. If they see they can get away with stuff, they will. Know when to draw the line. When they even start so say something disrespectful to you, stop them right there. Take away some priveleges or something. It's all about knowing who u are are them learning who they are. Like deep down... It's easier to command respect when they know that u can be trusted, and when they know that u love them, and that u'd give them the world HOWEVER, that doesn't mean they can do whatever. Reprimand them for disrespecting others. Be tough, no means no.They'll respect u for it, especially if it's rooted in love.

It's like, asking kids stuff about them if u wanna know it. Know where their minds are, the values they have, what's bothering them. Offer your stories and advice, but also know that they'll either take it or leave it. The more u know about each other, the less the kids will blow u off, thinking "u don't know anything about me."

    I hope that helps :)

Oh, and PS: You might wanna see if their behavior is a reflection of yours.

Well, for starters make sure you are not being a smartass yourself. Your kids are going to act out what they see and hear from you and think it's O.K. Be a good role model. You need to put some appropriate negative consequences in place as well. For example, they get one warning for saying or doing something disrespectful, if you hear them do it again in that same day, they need to have something important to them taken away. It has to really mean something to them though, or it won't work. Also, make sure that you reward them in some way and notice when they are being polite and showing that they can actually act respectful. This has worked for me. I'm a teacher and a parent.

    Oh I don't know...like father, like...

You could start by quit asking smartass questions. Children will do as you do, not as you say. Teach them respect by respecting others yourself first. There is a game called "Follow the leader", well its a life game kids play. If they see you not respecting, they won't respect either. Don't expect your children to do something that you are not willing to do as well.

Well, I certainly hope that you don't talk to them the way that you phrased your question! Positive discipline and reinforcements are useful when dealing with children. Be effective in your discipline but also fair and appropriate. You can't fail at being a parent unless you give up. You might also seek some counseling if things are really out of control.

First of all you need to know its basically your fought. You should have disciplined them from the get go. When they first started being smarties you should have grounded them or took privlages from them now your going to have to straighten up the monsters you created its going to take time but a little effort on your part and whom ever else puts up with this can turn this bad parenting around good LUCK.

Try stripping their bedrooms of everything except the bed and clothes. As they learn to speak and act in a respectful manner, gradually give them their things back. This worked wonders with my kids.

My advice is to punish them, and stick to it.I used to ground my kids or take away television privelidges, but I would find myself going ahead and letting them do those things anyway.I was not even realizing I was doing it.Sometimes I just plain forgot. Now I make sure the punishment sticks and I do not sway no matter how much they whine or try to worm their way out.Now they mind what I say or they know what will happen.

well white people tend to have family issues. I am hispanic and us kids, if we dont respect our parents, we get beat. So maybe you should beat your kids?

I feel bad for parents in this country, I wish that their children respected them more. Not saying all do but most.
