12 x 12 is one square foot. The 2' by 3' shelf has 6 square feet.

If the boxes are only stacked one deep, the shelf can hold 6 of them, however, if you stack the boxes to the ceiling, it will depend on how high the ceiling is (and if there isn't a ceiling, you can stack them infinitely high and the shelf can hold an infinite number of boxes).
