Actually, cars have several fuel filters when they come from the factoy. Once in the hands of owners though... all bets are off! If nobody has removed any filters on your car, you still have them.

A clogged fuel filter generally makes itself known by poor performance at higher speeds. You may note that you cannot achieve the same freeway speeds as before, or maybe the engine starts running poorly. In short, a clogged fuel filter cannot handle the hi flow rate of the engine when it's asking the filter for all it's got.

On some of my cars, I have a fuel screen before the fuel pump, a primary filter after the fuel pump (usually mounted to the frame of the car) and a secondary fuel filter mounted in the engine compartment.

Fuel injection cannot tolerate contaminated fuel and hope to provide the spray pattern it was designed to produce. While a carburetor is a little more forgiving, the internal passages are still quite small and the whole thing operates in a venturi, something that doesn't tolerate a whole lot of impurities either.

Your best bet is in getting a service manual and finding out just what your car has. All is a cheap fix but not all is easy to get to.

    Good luck!

Finding a gas filter varies with the model.....most have them right after the gas tank while I have seen some right in the engine compartment......those on the exterior are round and are metallic while ones in engine compartment are clear glass or plastic.....

Follow gas tank lines underside of body till you see a cylinder about 2-3 inches in diameter....should have line in and out....newer models have 3 lines attached for vacuum.

Some people will "guesstimate" on when to change a fuel filter.

To achieve good gas mileage and keep dirt out of fuel system...call the professionals or check online for your model/year car....sorry I have no websites at this time but they are out there. just type in search "fuel system maintenance"....go from there. In 10 minutes you will have an answer or in a half hour exactly what you need.....save the sites to your favorites for future reference even if it's spark plug gap.

yes, all cars have gas filters, check underneath the car around the drivers side there should be a filter around there. Or trace your fuel line back from the gas tank and you should find it then.
