When it was first out, It was rather controversial, it was like 'All in the Family' for the comics strips. Alcoholism, spousal abuse, being unemployed, collecting welfare, physical confrontations, domestic violence, lying to the wife, and mistrust of outsiders were all shocking to see in the comic section of the paper. However, when year after year it was the same thing, it really kind of got old. There never seemed to be any serious changes, and the fact that most of the strips are all 'stand alones' (they dont follow a greater continuing story line) led to dull repeats of the same basic story repeating over and over- Andy wont get a job, he hangs out in the bar, talks crap about his wife, gets in a fight, gets drunk, tries to sneak in the house at 3 am, and smart mouths/ insults his wife. Controversial 30 years ago, very mild today.
As for the artistic style, I found it appealing, and obviously the creator has a flair for cartoon style illustration. Its nowhere near the level of anime or CGI, but it fit well with the other newspaper strips.
