"Bad" artists know how to talk about their art and make you feel like there is something wrong with you for not getting it. : ) I teach art appreciation and have this discussion every semester. I show the works of Norman Rockwell, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol and have the students discuss which are artists and which aren't. The answer being they all are, but with the viewer determining which they appreciate (and respect).

I don't know how those guys got famous but one surefire way for an artist to become rich and famous is to piss off the religious right, works with any media,

Payola. It's illegal. Record companies give cash and gifts to music directors and DJ's to play their music. Some people hear something enough times, they think it's popular, so they go buy it just to be in the "in crowd". Radio stations would like for you to thnk that they play the music because it is requested by the listeners, but that simply isn't true.

It's all about promotions, regardless of how bad they are if their promotor gets them constant photo shoots, interviews, commercials etc.. and endorsements they will seem like superstars of the year but get them in the studio with out electronic backup they sound like they just ate 10 lemons.

Good question. I think it's because the standards have been lowered. Anything is art anymore. And modern artists have the gull and the arrogance to try to make us think that it's beyond our understanding.

Sorry about this answer in advance

I told you "sorry", but indeed the taste of good or bad art is just as much part of our environment as it is with food. You either like it or you don't. Sometimes "you can aquire a taste of it"

    Have a good day.

Being at the right place at the right time.

There are some real talented artists out there, but they just haven't landed in the right place at the right time.

Keep in mind that many artists who are extremely popular and well compensated at one time...are complete unknowns to the next generation.,
