Can PC3200 RAM work in a PC2700 slot?

Question

I would like to add more RAM to my computer, and PC3200 is less expensive than PC2700. Will the PC3200 work in the same slot as the PC2700? I'm assuming it would and the only deal is that the RAM will be operating at 333mhz rather than its rated 400mhz. Input?

90% of ram is backwards compatible.

You just have to stick to the type, ie: DDR SDRAM etc.....
DDR will normally under clock quite well.

Alot of people assume it's not so, but what they neglect to take into consideration is 333MHZ, 400MHZ are usually rated "up to" speeds.
Most are capable of under clocking!

PC3200 module RAM supposedly uses PC2700 features when slotted in a PC2700 ram slot

It will work if the PC3200 is backwards compatible. Some memory sticks are, some aren't. My comp is rated for PC2700, I put in a PC3200, and my BIOS wouldn't recognize the increased RAM. Use at your own discretion.

If the pin alignments are correct yes but it will run at the fastest your motherboard supports.

PC2700 uses a 184-Pin DIMM Slot
PC3200 comes in 2 varieties 184-Pin DIMM Slot (DDR1), 240-Pin DIMM Slot (DDR2)

You can distinguish the differences by the label DDR and DDR2, sometimes you can distinguish them by the type (PC3200, PC2-3200)

no it will not. the speed varies and you can only have a certain ammount of ram speed on one side of ram slots. to little to too much speed in the ram and the computers motherboard willl not be able to read it.

PC2700 RAM is rated for 2.5V+/-0.2V,
PC3200 RAM is rated for 2.6V+/-0.1V.
These tolerances are close enough to cause potential intermittant-headaches on 2.5V Motherboard.

It might work, and it might not. Just to be sure I would go with PC-2700. Also I would try www.buymemory.com they show the same price for PC-2700 and PC-3200.
