Best trip of my life was on the Sunset Limited in the 1970's, from Phoenix to Houston. We had a private room with lighting you could alter, from bright to subdued, even change the color, from red to blue, etc.

I was travelling with a girl who was very erotic. It was like an experience you'd see in the movies. I won't go into details, but I remember pretty much, every moment in the room, and sometimes at the back of the train.

i've never had a meal like the one that was served for dinner, our first evening on the Limited. Hurtling across the New Mexican desert @ over 90 miles per hour, being served by an excellent staff, eating with sterling silver flatware, lenox China, and crystal goblets, as the crimson sun set in the West, was truly memorable.

Alas, those days are long gone. I understand the Orient Express comes close to this experience, but the tarriff is huge.

Indeed, those were the days, even during the 1970s, which you are describing, when Amtrak was just beginning (and it still had the feel of private ownership and service). Unfortunately, today's service is far from what you were describing, especially the food (unbelievably management has actually been toying with the idea of doing away with dinner service altogether). I have never actually used an Amtrak long-distance train but always wanted to try the Empire Builder or Sunset Limited, the scenery those two trains offer is just magnificient (and if the Hiawatha were still around, that would be another choice). And, yes, the Orient is in a class of its own, at least on the price! However, from what I understand and have read, it is indeed a great trip if one has deep enough pockets.

I've been on the Sunset Limited and Southwest Chief on a trip from Tucson to St. Louis connecting in San Antonio. Mainly these days I stick to the Regional service (formerly Acela Regional, but renamed because it's not high-speed) between Richmond's Main Street Station and Alexandria, Va.

I took the Amtrack Vacation Package in the summer of 2000 and went from NYC to CA and back stopping along the way and staying in motels they set up for us in the different states we stopped in for a couple of days. We had a sleep car on the whole trip. It was the best tripI've ever ridden on a Train. The Trains we were on are: Lake Shore Limited,Empire Builder,Coast Starlighter,California Zephyr, and Cardinal

First, the AMTRAK hierarchy needs to do some issues -- a million. ignore Richard Nixon's order to the first AMTRAK president -- "power it into the floor" 2. rigidity the freight railroads to honor a clause contained in the contract -- AMTRAK trains DO have precedence on the lines. [and AMTRAK? do not pre-pay the on-time incentives] also, tell [a number of] the freight railroads that your price for making use of their lines if for THEM to fix THEM. 3. Insure that their butts are not formed like the seats of their chairs 4. shrink their promotion budget and positioned it into refurbishing/repairing/replacing rolling inventory and reason potential.. 5. arise for yourselves at the same time as it comes time on your authorities subsidy. that is for infrastructure, no longer inflated salaries. After 9-11, the airways were given $350 BILLION [i imagine]; AMTRAK? no longer even an "up yours!" 6. Petition Congress to take a good look on the 1997 Amtrak Reauthorization bill. you comprehend? it truly is the single which compelled AMTRAK to foot the bill for ALL indemnities because of injuries; inspite of if it became THE FAULT OF THE FREIGHT RAILROAD! 7 Harken decrease back to the days at the same time as W. Graham Claytor became President of AMTRAK -- It ran like a railroad, no longer a fashion to throw money away. And it made money less than his tenure. 8. of direction, more effective routes will be tremendous, too. . . Hoghead, I agree including your rant about "once you're referred to as, you bypass". My father became less than that for 19 years [and a extra 11 previously i became born] And now? i'm less than that particular same onus, except i'm attending to bypass out and "%. up the products" [as they say] at the same time as some motor vehicle motive force thinks that a 17 000 ton prepare can end on a dime [properly, they could if the dime became 3 miles lengthy]

Local trips are very fun.. I frequently take The Wolverine, Blue Water and Illinois Zephyr and business class is very cheap!

Its fun and just relaxing to get away without driving or flying.
