homolog/homologue : A significantly similar DNA, RNA or protein sequence that stems from a common ancestor.
ortholog/orthologue: A homolog that has retained the same function as the sequence it is compared to, but in a different species.
paralog/paralogue: a homolog that has a function different from the sequence it is compared to.
