back channel 原是政治/外交術語，指秘密連絡管道/非正式外交途徑。用在電訊方面的back-channel是指"反向的回轉通道"。在你這句話裡，"Every speaker was competing with the distractions of e-mail, instant messaging, Web surfing, online bill paying, blogging and an Internet chat "back channel" where conferencees supplied snarky commentary on the speakers."，back channel 的意思接近"通訊的秘密管道"，an Internet chat back channel 是 一個網路聊天的秘密管道，在這裡參加會議者會對演說者提出嚴峻犀利(尖酸刻薄)的評論。(反正是秘密管道，演說者也不得而知)你這一段蠻有趣的，因為在會議中演說者在台上可能說的口沫橫飛，但底下的與會者卻忙著讀寫email、即時通、上網、網上購物、寫或瀏覽部落格，甚至另闢網路聊天的秘密管道在對演說者作極盡批評之能事。
